There is nothing we love to see more here on SHEROES than women working together and collaborating. And when those women are best friends who are individually masters of their craft, that extra dose of joy, connectivity, and mutual support brings a layer of depth that may be subtle, but is undeniably present. On Tragic Magic, the collaborative debut album by ambient composer, vocalist, and producer, Julianna Barwick and experimental harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, the music is not only a document of their friendship, but also a multilayered story of the journey they took together for the once in a lifetime opportunity that brought them to Paris to record at Philharmonie de Paris and its Museum of Music, the histories of the antique and vintage instruments they recorded with, juxtaposed with the devastating wildfires that had just happened in their home city of Los Angeles. Hence the collision of tragic and magic. A couple of weeks ago Julianna and Mary were kind enough to find some time in their tour schedule to sit down with me in front of a live audience at Mophonics studios in New York City for a lovely conversation about the making of the new album, working together, and the special synergy of their friendship.
