Spotlight On: MARIKA HACKMAN

ABOUT this week’s podcast guest + radio hour featured interview:

A sigh can mean so many things - from sadness, anxiety, depression and frustration, to relief, comfort, pleasure, and love. Enter Big Sigh, an apt title for the brand new album from UK singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Marika Hackman, her fifth full length album and first of original material in four years. Written during a time when worry about breathing in close proximity to one another was at its peak, the pandemic saw Marika Hackman return home to be with her family which brought on both feelings of pastoral childhood nostalgia, and reflections on the stark contrast to her adulthood. In today’s conversation, you’ll hear how Marika broke out of a creative dry spell to write and record this incredible collection of songs over two and a half years, embodying a new level of confidence that saw her play nearly everything you hear on the record other than the gorgeously arranged strings and brass, as well as finally taking the reins as a producer, and how incredibly important, yet still rare, visibility in that role is as a queer woman. I am thrilled to welcome Marika Hackman as this week’s SHERO in the Spotlight.
